I literally just finished my playthrough of ff9 on my S3 so...
Here's what I have (Some of which you absolutely need to have on at all times regardless of what you are playing)
System- None of them checked. I've found fastboot to be really buggy and sometimes just freezes up my fpse. The ps loading screens really aren't that long
Audio-
Spusync- YOU NEED TO HAVE THIS CHECKED AT ALL TIMES. This is likely why you have no sound at all. As far as I know, you still need to close fpse entirely (use the task manager if you have to) and then start it up again for most of these options to take effect unless that's been changed.
Enhance sound emulation- I dunno if it does anything, but why the hell not. I leave it checked anyway, and my sound is 100% perfect in every game I've played (except one time in suikoden where a unite attack gave me a really obnoxious screech, that was a rare thing though.
Dunno if the other options do anything, don't care atm unless someone tells me they do something that I'm missing.
Video
Framelimiter- There is no reason to have this unchecked to be honest with you.... you know... unless you like the idea of setting your gpu ablaze This limits you to 60 fps which you will not have any problems at all getting on this phone. I don't see any reason at all to let your phone be chugging away at 100+ fps when it makes zero difference to your game. (if you tab out of fpse without closing it, sometimes it bugs out and lets fps fly again, causing your game to go into superspeed, but this doesn't happen often and I couldn't reproduce it)
Frameskip- I didn't need this till a couple updates ago, but I do now. If I had this unchecked, I'd get 30fps on a regular basis (10-20 or less in battles).
Printfps- ...not needed, but I like to see my constant 55-60
Screenfiltering- Again, no idea what this does, but it seemed to help in the big picture
Enhanced 3d rendering- Saw no difference so I dunno if it does anything, but again what the hell why not.
Boost high res games- Same as above
Now, with all of those checked... open your task manager and kill fpse. Then re-open it and start up ff9. You should be thoroughly amazed by the crisp sounds and non-choppy gameplay. However, you will get slowdown on big explody spells and summons, but it's minor.
I do not use OpenGL. I have no interest in opening that can of worms (no pun intended). The graphics aren't perfect, but they do me just fine and I get perfect sound and fps to boot.
If this doesn't work, don't shoot me. I tried, and I'm not sure why our phones are different
P.S. I've used this exact setup for every other game I have played as well, and they all play just as perfectly
