Final Fantasy 8 GF Boost Problem

Hi everyone I have being playing ff8 for about half an hour and noticed that when you summon a GF you cannot boost it (on the ps1 version you pressed select and you had to hammer square - on fpse it does not give you this option - I have tried various key combos but no luck

Any ideas would be a massive help

Or you can not summon gfs at all..They suck anyway :)
