Nvida Shield USB Stick not showing up

I have recently purchased a Nvidia Sheild running the 4.4 stock Rom. If I boot up FPSE with a USB stick plugged in it does not show the USB stick up for me. But if I start FPSE without the USB stick plugged in then plug in the stick after it has loaded I can access the folder and get to the files on the USB stick. Does anyone know why it is doing this and if so is there a fix I can do? I just hate having to remember to have to USB stick unplugged when I load up FPSE
