learning curve

I've been reading guides, watching videos and lurking trying to get up to speed and fix some of the problems I run into. I'm a software engineer but I'm still having issues getting over the hump with diagnosing issues and fixing them (I'm not that experienced with android dev, but I'm reading up on that too)

So I guess my most basic question is, do I need to root my device to see and edit .ini files. Messing with that seems like the first step to getting my hands dirty

no need to root, if you want to play with ini file, go to MISC menu of fpse and use Backup all files and restore all files, this will backup files to /sdcard/fpsebackup and restore file from this place once you change them.
