Screen Freeze w/ Phonejoy Nexus 7

Whenever I try and use my Phonejoy controller with fpse on a nexus 7, the screen will freeze whenever I first press a button. The game continues as I can hear the sound and if I go into the menu and come back, it resumes. It'll freeze again as soon as I use the controller.
Is this a known issue, or is there any sort of workaround?

I get that issue with the onscreen controls using OpenGL on heart of darkness, what game are you trying to play?

It happens with every button I press on phonejoy.
And it doesnt matter which game I try, it happens in every one.
I've tried it with Legend of Mana, Tony Hawk 2, Chrono Cross, and XCom.

EDIT: After further playing today I found out it only happens when I have the 'force mono core' setting on. Some of my games crash and tell me to use that setting. The on-screen controls don't freeze the screen but any button on the phonejoy controller will.

do you well use bluez ime with your phonejoy?

I use bluez ime, yeah.

The emulator works fine with phonejoy if the mono core setting is off. Its only when its enabled that I get this problem.
