In most rpg's for the ps1 when you move around the d-pad and hold a particular button(usually x or o) to have the character run around instead of walk. How do we set that up because every phone except for the htc leo does not support multi-touch. Anyway to do this using the screen overlays? I'm using an HTC touch pro 2. I don't want to use the keyboard because form what I've noticed you get a hefty decrease in FPS.

Just make that button sticky.

Or if you don't want to make the button a sticky you could turn on stylus mode. That way you can hold 'X' and while holding move your finger around to walk.

Yes, I forgot about that one. It's even better because I always forgot to release (X) in FFVII when entering battle so it used to cancel my choices. Since overlays are close to edge of screen (and my device has plastic edges around it) I found more confortable to put two (X) buttons on screen in stylus mode. That way I could chose one that's better depending on my character's position...
