Cant use items in Wipeout 3 special edition

Hello guys and girls
i have a pretty strange and specific problem with wipeout 3 special edition.
I tried it with an image directly created from my own disc and with a downloaded.
With both images i can play the game normally except for the fact that me and the pcs cant use items.
when i press the item use button the item disappears but nothing happens.
I would really appreciate any help as it is an truely awesome game.
