Digimon World 1: Controls Unresponsive, Please Assist

Neither keybound Hardware Keys nor the Touchpad keys seem to respond after loading the game. Been messing with it for hours and still can't get past the "Press Start" screen.... 
I searched all around the site and found nothing so I figured I'd make a post here. Sorry if I'm being redundant lol
